ADN Program Information

The Associate Degree Nurse or Registered Nurse (RN) is prepared to coordinate, plan and provide nursing care in hospitals and other health agencies. The RN assists patients with personal care, provides teaching and counseling to prevent illness and promote health, and performs specialized treatments and procedures. Registered Nurses function as team leaders and direct the care provided by Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), as well as unlicensed health care workers.

Graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program are qualified to take the California state board examination for licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in California.

Applicants who accept admission to the  SBCC ADN program but do not give notification of their status change (i.e. are unable to attend) will be considered a "no-call/no-show" and will not be considered for acceptance in the future.

APPROXIMATE WEEKLY SCHEDULE

The ADN Program consists of required classroom, Allied Health & Nursing Lab (AHNL) practice which includes skills acquisition and simulation, and clinical practice in a local health care facility. The ADN Program is full-time.

Classes and labs are held Monday through Friday (various days) from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Clinical Rotation schedules vary and may include: 

The Allied Health and Nursing Laboratory is open Monday through Friday during the day.  Please check with the lab for current hours. Students are expected to spend many hours in the Allied Health and Nursing Lab when they are not in class or clinical, to learn and be evaluated on all required nursing skills.  

The program is full-time and all students are expected to be available M-F 8-5 and Saturday for clinical every semester.  Scheduled will be sent to students before the start of each semester.

ESTIMATED COST

The estimated cost of the ADN program is $7,000.  Students must purchase uniforms, nursing shoes, watch with a second hand, stethoscope, bandage scissors, hemostat, skills tote, ATI CARP ($1,000), and required textbooks. Students are responsible for transportation to and from clinical agencies and to the college. The first semester is the most costly. Scholarships and financial aid are available through the Financial Aid Office.

HOUSING

If a student plans to move to the Santa Barbara area prior to beginning the program, it is advised to look into housing early in the process, as rents are high in the area and the rental market is somewhat tight.  Santa Barbara City College does not provide student housing; however, information is compiled on a website to assist the student in finding housing.

COMMUTING

Students who plan to commute to SBCC need to factor in heavy incoming morning traffic and allow enough travel time for a timely arrival to class and clinicals. 

LVN to RN

LVN to RN students are entered twice per year, in the Fall and Spring semesters, and will complete three semesters of nursing courses. Applicants must meet all of the program prerequisites plus hold a current LVN license, and apply during an application acceptance period.   

TRANSFER NURSING STUDENTS

Students previously enrolled in a state-accredited registered nursing program within the past  year and in good standing, may transfer into the SBCC ADN Program on a space available basis.Transfer students must meet all SBCC ADN Program application and entrance requirements. Transfer students are required to provide a letter from the previous nursing program(s) verifying performance and placement in theoretical and clinical levels.

FOREIGN NURSES

Individuals who are Registered Nurses in another country, and who are required by the California Board of Registered Nursing to complete nursing courses to qualify for the NCLEX may apply to the SBCC ADN Program. Admission is determined on a space available basis. Foreign nurses must meet all SBCC ADN Program application and entrance requirements.

BACKGROUND CHECK

Students are required to clear a criminal background check.  Failure to complete this process will result in dismissal from the program. Should a clinical agency refuse to allow a student based on the outcome of either the background check or drug screen, the program is not responsible for arranging alternate placements.
